1981 BMW Airhead - May 1, 2017, 09:20 AM

I began posting pics of my 1981 BMW R65 in my cb350f thread. Didn't want to take over that thread so figured I would start a new one.

I bought it back in September '16 that was rebuilt by the PO. He did a really good job and it was the perfect base for me.

Pics from him:

As soon as I bought it I did a bunch of maintenance so I can have the peace of mind. I did engine oil and filter, transmission oil, driveshaft oil, final drive oil, brake fluid, brake pads, fuel filter, fork oil, and air filter. The PO had a shop do some ignition related work and they also adjusted the valves right before I bought it. I rode it all fall and enjoyed it. Then when winter hit I decided to make some changes.

I really wasn't a fan of the big chrome twin exhausts. I bought some Matte black "megaphone" mufflers from Dime City to replace them.

I also wasn't a fan of the paint he went with. I liked the grey he had before he did the black paint and gold stripes.

I decided to pull everything off and bring it out to my good friend Mitch Herlihy to paint (@HerlihyPaintandFabrication on Instagram if you want to check him out). I ended up decing to go with Jeep Anvil Grey for the paint.

Also decided to shorten the front fender a bit. You can see the pieces we cut off on the ground here.

While I had everything off I decided to take off some covers off the engine to paint black.

I prepped and painted with Duplicolor engine enamel in low gloss black then sanded the BMW back down to the aluminum.

I ordered some black headlight mount brackets from Dime City.

I also had a brake fluid leak from inside the brake lever. Ended up buying a new master cylinder kit to rebuild it, put new brake pads on, and rebled the brakes.

Got the bike all back together on Thursday and Friday. Filled the empty tank up with gas, charged the battery, and aired up the tires on Saturday, then started it for the the first time in 6 months and rode out to a car/bike show hosted by NuConceptz on Sunday.

My long time friend Mitch from Herlihy's Paint and Fabrication who painted the bike the same color as his c5 Corvette cruised with me.

I ended up taking home 3rd place for best motorcycle.

Next plans are paint the fork legs and brake calipers black, rewrap the exhaust with black wrap, grind down the stock handlebar mounts off the top triple tree and paint the triple trees black as well. Will likely do that next winter!

Going to be doing a proper photoshoot here soon hopefully with some nice scenery. Really want to do a photoshoot with the matching vette as well.

Nice.
Anvil Grey fits the character of the bike better in my opinion.
Reminds me of the jet hot coat on military aircraft.

Thanks. What does everyone think about doing the forks, brake calipers, and front engine cover in black?

That is so cool. I like the tires as well. Don't paint any more parts black; it's perfect right now. It looks great. Maybe grey for the seat to make the lines flow from tank to tail.
