Any vintage "thumper" owners? - April 3, 2012, 10:58 AM

I just picked up a 1975 Honda XL250 "thumper" project bike to putt putt around town and explore some gravel/dirt roads. Bought it for dirt cheap and it pretty much complete. I had to completely over haul the carbs, adjusted the valves and timing chain tension-er, adjust the points and timing, de-rusted the tank, cleaned up the petcock and a few things here and there. It runs like a dream now. Surprisingly it doesn't burn or leak any oil, pretty awesome for a 36 yr old bike.

Anyone have one of these cool little toys? Any place in MD where I can do some light trail riding? I'm a newbie to the dirt so it's just going to be slow and easy rides, not like 20hp will get you anywhere fast anyways.

Thanks guys! Is that "Vintage" ride still on in April? I might have to come along, but I think 60mph would probably be my max speed limit, lol.

Check out the facebook page and don't forget to "like."
Just hit me up there and let me know if your in.
Its going to be a super chill ride, so 60 is more then enough.
I for one will be 2up and on knobbies... so...

Congrats on the bike!

That's a great idea! I'd love to scoop something like that up for buzzing around the town.

Definitely leave some street-knobbies on it though!

"Barn" finds are popping up on Craigslist left and right now that the weathers nice. You have to be super quick, but you can find them dirt cheap. The only drawback is a majority of them have "no title" but there are a few ways around that.

Vintage bikes are definitely fun. Cheap to buy, cheap to maintain, cheap insurance and best of all cheap on gas.

Man, that's a sweet looking bike. I miss my CB550 I sold last year as well. The suckiest part is that the guy I sold it too is trying to flip it for 1 grand profit and I am sure he will get it as well

Vintage thumpers? I've got a late 70's Sachs moped in the barn. 50CC of raw power coolness with pedel power back up!

There's bold riders and old riders, but damn few bold old riders.
